The Gathering Edge – Chapter 27

Bechimo

In which Win Ton discusses his student’s future.

It probably says something about my priorities as a reader that my reaction to the end of this chapter was something along the lines of, “All this getting-to-know-each-other is fine, but at last! more plot!”

Joyita is not being behind in grasping opportunities to work on his body language, I see.

(I find myself reminded of Janet Kagan’s Hellspark, which we know the authors are fans of. One of the subplots in that is about a ship-based AI who makes a significant advance in becoming her own person once she starts acquiring practical experience of body language — in her case, by spending a lengthy period operating a robot drone accompanying her captain on a mission away from the ship.)

It’s interesting to “watch” Joyita deal with the pointers the Pathfinders are providing. Bechimo‘s crew is just too inured to seeing what he’s already done, to recognize and offer pointers on additional details. The Pathfinders, OTOH, were “on mission” and fearful of the Great Enemy’s wiles, and thus picked up on all kinds of discrepancies.
