Surebleak
In which it’s a new day.
It looks like we’re done with dramatic confrontations for now, and are into the part of the book where things are wound down and tied off. There were a couple more dramatic confrontations I was expecting, but maybe they’re being saved for next time.
There’s at least one more chapter showing how things are at Tinsori Light — I peeked at the next page, to make sure this wasn’t the actual end of the book — and I think there might be at least one more on Surebleak after that. Which is to say that I hope there will be, because I want to know how the wine-making project is getting on.
I’m amused by Val Con’s annoyance at AIs arriving and departing without bodies.
I want to know about the vision / waking memory Nova was experiencing, of pilot Cantra yos’Phelium. It would be really good to hear from Cantra again.
I’m with Skip. I hope Accepting the Lance will give us at least a glimpse of the vision, or perhaps the authors will use it to give new readers a synopsis of the escape from the Old Universe.
Meanwhile, in Tocohl’s message, she explains that an accidental anomaly occurred, which resulted in one universe being destroyed (not ours). Compare this explanation with the message Seignur Veeoni sends to Uncle in the next chapter: I note that there is evidence that the universe may have ended and been respun during the change of control. It is interesting that her wording echoes that which Ren Zel uses, when he is first resurrected: The threads have re-formed . . . Both of them speak of something, not created, but re-created. This wording might indicate that Ren Zel did indeed use his power to “unmake the universe” before it was respun/re-formed.
I note that when Tocohl says that it wasn’t “our” universe that was destroyed, she doesn’t say how she knows. She may just be assuming that it wasn’t based on the fact that it currently exists, not having considered the possibility of it having been destroyed and immediately re-woven.
