Fortune’s Favors – Chapter 3

In which Mar Tyn receives a warning.

I wonder if it’s actually possible for a Luck’s gift to break like that, or if it’s just a superstition. I can see how people who rely for success on a Luck might get to worrying about the possibility of it going wrong.

I don’t believe Mar Tyn’s luck has actually broken, though I can see why the people around him might think so, what with the broken arm and all. Even I did think it was a bit of an unfortunate coincidence that Bendi had her run of misfortune just then until the possibility was pointed out that somebody had arranged for it to happen.

But I have read stories before where a lucky person has an unlucky streak that turns out be the necessary prelude to greater fortune. (One that comes to mind, which also involves what Mar Tyn would recognise as a Luck who loses her position because her luck seems to have broken, is Janet Kagan’s Hellspark.)
