Accepting the Lance – Chapter 28

Blair Road
Boss Conrad’s House

In which Boss Conrad receives a letter.

The cinnamon toast is a small detail that shows how things have improved since Boss Conrad got the Council of Bosses set up. I’d bet cinnamon was hard to come by in the old days.

As such, it’s an interesting detail to find in a chapter where someone is demanding Boss Conrad’s retirement. Maybe they’re not a fan of cinnamon?

Although I notice they’re not demanding the Council of Bosses be dismantled, just that the Korval influence be removed. If this is a ploy by the Department of Interior, of course, it makes sense to limit the scope of the demands, to increase the chances of them being accepted; and after the leaders of Korval have been removed from the picture, the Department doesn’t care what happens to Surebleak after that, for good or ill.

The other thing that strikes me about this demand to boot Korval off the planet and confiscate its assets is that it reminds me of the Council of Clans’ judgement at the end of I Dare, but with an even less sensible timeframe attached.

One thing that struck me was Pat Rin’s immediate identification of Boss Surebleak as “herself.” From that moment, I was imagining a female as the head of this ploy.

It reminded me of Vandar and what plans the DoI had for that world. They could have nicely used a puppy council for further plans. So I asked myself is this whole ploy for Boss Surebleak is a diversion from the real threat or a secondary plan if the first one doesn’t work as intended.
