I read the main books in this series in chronological order, starting with Crystal Soldier. Recently I read the short stories to fill in some blanks. I felt this one shed a little light on the older cousin in Balance of Trade. He seemed too consumed with his vines and grapes, it felt almost a bit arcane.
This short story felt gruesome. It reminded me of something by Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs, or Kate Daniels.
Not sure why is is titled “Necessary Evils” either.
