Balance of Trade – Chapter 7

Day 42

Elthoria
Arriving

In which Jethri begins to find his place in his new home.

I like the bit at the end of this chapter where Jethri finds that his new quarters are in some ways very different from the old quarters he left behind last chapter, and in some ways just the same.

Between Norn ven’Deelin and Gaenor tel’Dorbit, there’s probably quite a bit of information to be gathered about how Liaden differs from English in the matter of sentence structure and so on, if one is of a mind to gather that sort of information.

Leaving one’s home, with a somewhat less than enthusiastic send-off (particularly from his mother), is hard. The “welcome” is not much of a welcome from anyone but ven’Deelen and Gaenor tel’Dorbit.

(“Deelin” sounds like “Dealing”, which seems appropriate for a Master Trader. “Dorbit” is a name for a pilot?)

Yes, in fact I found myself a bit disoriented by the names, at first not taking the ven’Deelen seriously after assuming it was part of the scam. These names that are puns in Terran seemed better suited to a spoof than to a more serious novel.

During the family discussion before Jethri leaves, Grig explains, in reference to Old Tech: Some of the earlier studies—they went missing. Stolen.

I have to wonder whether this material was stolen by some early form of the DOI, to keep to themselves.
