Necessity’s Child – Chapter 17

In which Kezzi gets a lesson and Rys gets some assistance.

This being a re-read, I remember at least some of what is revealed later about the woman who is seeking something, and I wonder why she stopped to have her fortune read in the turn of a card; from what do I remember of her, it doesn’t seem like her to set store in such things.

Though perhaps there is something to the cards: after all, the card was right about her. Or perhaps that’s not the cards, but the person holding them, who sees things that others don’t. Or perhaps it’s just a coincidence; even if they operate only by random chance, the cards can’t be wrong all the time.

Having thought about it some, I think the answer to why the woman stops to have her card told might be in Chapter 21, when she tells Rys that she was already aware of his situation. If she knew already in this chapter that Rys was being sheltered by the community of which Droi and Kezzi are part, she may have stopped to talk to them in hope of learning something about how he got on, either indirectly or even directly if they had a message to pass on (since she probably didn’t know, before she spoke to him herself, that he’d lost his memory). In which case, imagine her frustration when Droi intimates that she knows what she’s after and then declines to tell her anything more!

Not having advantage of a re-read, still I assumed that she was looking for hints about his whereabouts by being in contact with the young women, not from the cards themselves.
