The Gathering Edge – Chapter 22

Bechimo
Conference Circle

In which secrets are discussed.

I suspect we’ll be hearing about that other ship again some time. I did wonder if it might be the Uncle’s ship — it would be nicely ironic if Theo and her father were so close to each other without knowing it — but Bechimo would have recognised it, having seen it at close quarters in the past.

As soon as Chernak mentioned space stations, I thought “Tinsori Light”, and sure enough… As far as I know, Theo has had no occasion to learn that one of her brother’s ancestors once encountered Tinsori Light in the new universe, and that’s probably just as well. Knowing about that would probably not soothe the pathfinders.

Come to think of it, given Spiral Dance‘s provenance, it may be just as well that Theo’s changed her mind about getting the pathfinders to look it over…

I wonder if the timid ship that hides in Brulit system is actually the long-awaited Bedel ship.

Maybe so, but it nagged at me that no one had looked it over before Daav and Aelliana choose to go off in it (at the end?) of Neogenesis. It just seems like a Chekov’s gun, although it may simply be a forgotten detail of continuity.

Nobody goes anywhere in Spiral Dance at any point in Neogenesis, unless you count Nova flying her from Korval’s lawn to a proper landing pad at the Port. (Where, I would assume, she will get properly looked over before anybody tries flying her again.)

Nor have Daav and Aelliana decided yet what ship they want to fly; at the end of the book, they’ve narrowed it down to two but are still waiting on an opportunity to inspect both before making their choice.

Ah . . . thank you. That explains the sense of suspense I was still feeling about it, then. The inspection is yet to happen. It may be one of the authors’ neat little details that is nothing more than a supporting detail, but for some reason I’m expecting *something* to come of it, maybe in the next book.

This was a deft insert by the authors in preparation for the continuation of part of the plot from Alliance of Equals to show up in Neogenesis.
