Due Diligence – Chapter 5

In which Fer Gun begins to be introduced to people.

Fer Gun is still accepting things without thinking them through. But at least he remembered to scan it first, so that’s something.

I like the recurring thread of Fer Gun being bemused by houses that have names, “like ships”. It’s easy, after having spent so much time reading about people living in such houses, to forget what a strange idea it is to people who haven’t.

I find that I share Chi’s hope that she will have an opportunity to speak to the cousins.

I liked Fer Gun’s bemusement with named houses, too. A small but meaningful character detail!
And I also want to see the cousins in balance.

There is much detail in showing what Chi intended when she proposed a second but separate contract for a jointly owned business venture of a small-trader and a small introductory trip. Chi tests this husband-pilot as rigorously as both pilots test the ship. And being a far more experienced pilot she never stops teaching him, insisting that he learn about proper documentation and papers as well as how to identify and deal with dishonest merchandise. – No pampering, no preparing when she calls the proctors. He has to see, to experience himself, that this is the right move.

On the other hand we see the relationship between Chi and Fer Gun develop to respect, caring and the beginnings of true friendship, Chi not dwelling on mistakes Fer Gun is learning from, but instead encouraging him to admit the truth about his cousins (“Did they never cheat anyone on the grey-fees”) and empowering him by giving him the truth about his grandfather. (Belief of being useless as all his Line (Aunt Jezmin) was a means by which his cousins controlled him, so the truth of his grandfather’s achievements, will have encouraged and freed him.) So here Fer Gun receives new data – to make a tapestry.

I particular like the way Fer Gun doesn’t back down when Chi really needs a nap.

We can easily see where Daav gets his wish of a spouse being a friend or at least a comrade pilot (Scout’s Progress) from.

I was glad to see Fer Gun finally receiving the background he was missing. He’s obviously not a researcher, and never thought to go looking for more information about his grandfather! I wish we’d been given a little more, though, a glimpse into his reactions as he finds out who and what his grandfather really was before he became a broken man. I wonder if he had had plans to ensure Fer Gun’s inheritance but died before he could put all the safeguards in place? I don’t really see a problem between what Fer Gun says he was taught, and the idea that Fer Gun was still a toddler when his grandfather died, because I think we were shown already with Jethri, how Arin started when he was very young, instilling pieces of information that did not become meaningful until much later.
