Due Diligence – Chapter 8

In which Chi yos’Phelium’s son is born.

Good morning, Daav. Welcome to the world. It’s going to have its ups and its downs, but that’s life for you, I’m afraid.

I don’t think I have anything particular to say about the revelation of Fer Gun’s cousins’ misdeeds; it was about what I expected from the hints we’d been given. It hadn’t occurred to me that Lady Graz might have been among the things they stole from him, but it made sense once it was said.

I didn’t comment on the fact, when it was first mentioned, that Fer Gun’s new ship and business operates out of Chonselta instead of Solcintra. I see that as being like the way Chi chose to furnish his room at Jelaza Kazone: she could have provided something more upmarket, but it would only have made him uncomfortable.

So Chi had succeeded in gaining worthy allies and trade partners for Korval as well as a considerate friend. She also succeeded in setting free the potential of a somewhat innocent pilot who had been cheated upon by his kin and setting that pilot on the path for success. Not least at all she had succeeded in proving – at least to herself – that her choice for the marriage contract had been right. A Pilot owning a small trading fleet of 2 ships is a quiet convenable choice and something totally different from a wingless nobody stranded far away from kin.

Her request “come and see me, Pilot, when you’re back again” surely is against all tradition. But then – Korval is fully capable of creating its own traditions.

The trick to keeping whoever Korval takes in its hand is to make them feel to be there by their own choice.
