Local Custom – Chapter 8

In which Anne is given a reason to go to Liad.

More evidence of how well-matched Er Thom and Anne are, if they can bring themselves to think of a match as being possible.

And another example, with Marilla, of a character who appears briefly but in memorable detail.

Not only Marilla but of course, Jerzy. Speaking of whom…Jerzy’s last name is interesting. In Italian, intagliare means “to engrave” but the English form intaglio can refer to a type of printing process or to a gemstone decorated by engraving. I don’t necessarily see a connection to Jerzy’s character (not like calling a Master Trader “ven’Deelin”).

Harking back to your earlier comment about idioms, perhaps the intention is that Jerzy is “a gem” (“a person held in great esteem or affection”).

Pushing the metaphor a bit further than is perhaps warranted, I could add that the fact he’s an engraved gemstone shows that he’s not a “diamond in the rough” (“a person of fine character but lacking refined manners or graces”).
