Local Custom – Chapter 29

In which Anne has two unpleasant conversations.

It’s vitally important that Anne and Er Thom have an opportunity for a clear and sensible conversation, so of course they’re prevented from having one.

I think Fil Tor Kinrae is lying when he says he didn’t realise who Anne was. Of course he knew; who else would she be? I reckon he just has such a low opinion of Terrans that, even faced with a scholar, and one who has a particular interest in the Liaden language, he assumes she can’t speak Liaden.

In this chapter, Anne stretched high on her toes, ceiling tiles an inch beyond her fingertips. I had meant to comment about Anne’s height at chapter 2, where she is described as only “middling tall” for a Terran at six feet! This is quite noticeably taller than “Terrans” of our day, for whom an average height of over 6 feet…even for males…is reported only for these countries: Bosnia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway. It almost makes me wonder whether Liadens are closer to the current average for our “Terrans,” which is about 5′ 9 1/2″ for the US.

Ed8r, I thought I read that Anthora takes after her mother, but Anthora is shorter than most of her clan, I think?

So…in To Cut an Edge, we are told that on average, Liadens are 5′ (1.52 m) tall, Terrans 7′ (2.13 m) tall, Clutch 9′ (2.74 m) tall. Edger is only 8 feet, so he must be a short turtle ( Agent of change)

Clutch are taller than [[Yxtrang]], who are just slightly taller than average Terran. Cannot recall where I read this.

Jela was only about 5 feet, and shorter than Cantra. I recall reading somewhere that Val Con is 5.5 feet, taller than most Liadens. Like Daav.
