Scout’s Progress – Chapter 28

In which Aelliana dances.

Daav doesn’t appear too put out that Aelliana has realised he tipped off Zan Der pel’Kermin, even though he asked that worthy person not mention his intervention. I surmise that he wouldn’t have minded Aelliana being told about Daav’s involvement, but wished to avoid any mention of that inconvenient person Delm Korval.

Things are going well for Aelliana and Daav at this point, but last chapter and this contain reminders that they both have troubles lurking in the background which, when they strike, are only going to strike the harder for having been successfully dodged thus far.

I love the conversation between Daav, Anne, and Er Thom about the Tree’s involvement with Korval’s contract marriages. She says Shan wasn’t sanctioned by the Tree and then sees the look each of them give her and reacts with I have to draw the line at galaxy-wide telepathy. I think I laughed out loud.

I posted before I was finished, above:

Immediately following, Anne tells Daav to “Call it off,” and before he thinks, he cries out in anguish I must have a child! He obviously was not reacting from a purely intellectual standpoint of Korval needing more children for its nurseries. This was from an inner longing.

This was one of the scenes with Daav that strengthened my belief that he must have lost a child at some point that we had not been told about yet, and since I had not yet read “Sweet Waters,” when I came to it, I was sure it must be about Daav, and that little Kisam must not have lived. Of course, I was all tangled in the chronology by then, and it took a while for me to sort it out.

Argh! My two previous comments here belong under chapter 27…Paul would you be so kind as to move them both and then delete this one?

So, regarding chapter 28, I had wanted to point out Jon’s comment to Daav about Aellianna’s progress with menfri’at:come at her hard like you’r going to do damage, and d*** me if she won’t back down every time…Never did hear who beats her. So Daav had instinctively recognized that she was intimidated, but now Jon has confirmed it for him. (Does he not mention the autodoc later?)
