Accepting the Lance – Chapter 94

Jelaza Kazone
Tree Court

In which Miri has had a long rest.

I wonder about the yellow, orange and red flowers with the peppery smell. The description reminds me of the nasturtium flowers my mother used to grow and use the edible parts in salads. As I recall, they had a peppery taste, but I don’t remember what their smell was like.

Accepting the Lance – Chapter 82

Jelaza Kazone

In which all cats are Bedel.

The part I like about this chapter is the character interactions: Yulie’s way of showing concern, and Memit’s hunt, and Droi pondering her place in the kompani.

Accepting the Lance – Chapter 64

Six of Us
Daglyte Seam

In which there are arrivals and departures.

I don’t like how the narrative keeps reminding us about Anthora’s dagger.

Accepting the Lance – Chapter 43

Six of Us
Jenarian Station

In which a ship is in need of repairs.

I remember saying, back at the end of Dragon in Exile, that I expected the adventures of Rys’s team would take up a significant portion of a whole book. It appears I was wrong about that.

It’s not clear just yet quite how much trouble Rys and Claidyne are in. The man with the pellet gun may have got suspicious on his own initiative, but there are other possibilities: for instance, perhaps the recognition code was out of date, and the station let them aboard only in order to find out who they really are.

Degrees of Separation – Chapter 4

Low Port

In which Don Eyr achieves a separation.

I wonder what Har Per’s lady friend sees in him? It’s clearly not his sparkling personality. Perhaps it’s that she appreciates what he sees in her.

Neogenesis – Chapter 20 part V

In which Val Con and Miri gather information about their visitors.

This is the first mention I can recall of there now being two separate branches of the Scouts, but it doesn’t surprise me. I presume the schism is a consequence of the events surrounding Korval’s big play and subsequent exile, and the subsequent removal of a chunk of Liaden society to Surebleak. Liaden society as a whole was divided over how to view Korval’s actions, and although many Scouts had a sympathy for Korval it is not to be supposed that they were unanimous in their approval.

Neogenesis – Chapter 20 part II

In which a family reunion or two occurs.

More bows and modes in this chapter than we’ve had in a while, including a couple of new ones. Well, it’s been a while since we’ve had a conversation, in other than everyday circumstances, between two parties familiar with the forms.

Neogenesis – Chapter 17

Vivulonj Prosperu

In which the Uncle is not in a good mood.

I’m not sure the Lyre Institute would share Dulsey’s assessment that they paid a great cost. They lost seven agents, but the way the Institute’s directors think, it’s not as if agents are real people; spending their lives to obtain a benefit for the directors is what agents are for.

Neogenesis – Chapter 14

Vivulonj Prosperu

In which a change of course is called for.

I don’t yet understand how the failure of the Catalinc Project could result in everything that is ascribed to it, but I note that it sounds very similar to the potential bad future Ren Zel has foreseen.
