Mouse and Dragon – Chapter 17

In which yos’Galan advises Korval, for the good of the clan.

Ah, Daav’s famous toasted cheese sandwiches.

On this readthrough, it strikes me that they’re toasted cheese sandwiches, because the word that’s been used up until now has been “handwich”. (At the risk of self-incrimination, I admit that this is a thing I’ve been actively tracking.) Perhaps it’s a translation convention, where “handwich” is the Terran word and bears some etymological connection to “hand” and “sandwich”, but the Liaden word is so completely different that one might as well translate it as “sandwich” and have done.

I like the idea that every toasted cheese sandwich is a unique work of art, and that there is therefore no wrong way to make one.

Credit the authors with having created a character I was completely captivated by. I was indignant, and angry, and expecting Aelliana to insist that she be paid what should have been hers all along. I was surprised, I guess, at Daav’s reaction: We are all cheated once…It is how we learn not to be cheated twice. Or, in current jargon: Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

    RE: toasted cheese sandwiches.
If you try to use a search engine for toasted cheese sandwich, you’ll find multiple entries for grilled cheese sandwich, since that is usually what they are, even if at home, a frying pan is usually substituted for an actual grill. I am curious about the TWO different kinds of cheese Daav uses, and the apple butter. I wonder whether this description resembles how the authors make theirs…I’ve never heard of apple butter in a grilled cheese sandwich! I have to use real butter on the outside, not oil, and I use only medium sharp cheddar for the cheese.

Anyone else want to chime in?
