Carpe Diem – Chapter 21

In which Cory and Meri get some new clothes.

I notice that Zhena Trelu neglects to mention to Salissa the shop assistant that Miri is married, and I wonder if that’s a factor in Salissa’s insistence on “looking pretty” as the primary factor in her clothing choices. On the other hand, Zhena Trelu does quite clearly specify “proper work clothes” and “warm”, without any measurable effect, so maybe she’d have taken the same tack anyway.

It hadn’t occurred to me before this re-read, but Zhena Trelu’s inclusion of the library on the day’s itinerary is presumably a response to Val Con’s request for books to help Miri with the language.

Can we speculate on what the device might be that they see in the store window?

The front was glassed in, giving a view of a multitude of coils, wires, and tubes. There were knobs on the top and sides, a piece of thin metal tubing extending from the back, and more knobs under the glass.

At first I was thinking radio, but Zhena Trelu has a little one, so what would this be…the back of a TV? But it seems as if someone would have mentioned this “newfangled” thing, if that were the case.

I think it is a radio – the piece of thin metal tubing sounds very like an antenna. Just a more elaborate consumer model than Zhena Trelu’s, perhaps the latest thing (or a very old thing, displayed in the window as a nostalgia piece).
