The Gathering Edge – Chapter 1

Bechimo
Wyrd Space

In which Bechimo‘s crew find a solution to a problem.

In the first proper chapter, we return to the crew of Bechimo, who are still where we left them, in the wyrd space with the mysteriously-appeared ship Spiral Dance.

Opening with a crew meeting offers a convenient way to introduce all the crew and the situation they’re in. (And little details about each of the crew, like Hevelin probably not being a pilot or Theo’s thought that Val Con, being only a man, is more reliable for having Miri keeping an eye on him. Which is probably true, at that, though not in the way Theo means it.)

Another thing that’s true though not in the way it’s meant is Kara’s attempt to explain to Theo that Val Con’s message is more serious than its surface content indicates. Kara is wrong about Val Con being Theo’s delm, but that doesn’t mean her insights into the subtleties of Liaden communication ought to be ignored entirely.

The anomalous situation in Dancer‘s subetheric unit might be a sign of the situation that Cantra used to sum up with the dictum that the devices of the Enemy always remember who they belong to.

Yes, of course you are correct, but I hope not. I have grown to trust Dancer, and I like to think it changed sides, with loyalty to Korval and tree.

So do I. Perhaps there’s reassurance to be taken from the fact that it’s only judged anomalous and not actively hazardous; it could be just a trace remnant, like subetheric scar tissue, of a situation that once was but no longer is.

Spiral Dance attacked the Illoheen on Vanehald in “Crystal Dragon” — or at least, she attacked the engineered soldiers commissioned by them. She attacked her original makers, proving herself free of Shereika manipulation. At least momentarily free. Ever since Spiral Dance slipped into Teapot space, at the end of Dragon Ship, I’ve been wondering what it will add to the mix.

My question is—and this seems as good a place as any to ask it— what relationship, if any, is there between this “wyrd space” and Tinsori Light? Does the healing (and possibly remaking/?) of the current universe mean that there will be no more leakage into this space? If this space itself were anywhere near Tinsori Light, it seems as though Bechimo would have recognized the reawakening of the Old One, but he expresses no knowledge of it. Is it possible that there will still be leakage in this location? Or did RenZel’s efforts in Neogenesis seal off the Old Universe everywhere? What do other readers think?

I don’t have any detailed theories about how the wyrd space connects to Tinsori Light, but I don’t think there’s going to be any more mysterious appearances there after the end of Neogenesis. My impression is that Ren Zel’s efforts are to be taken as having definitively sealed off the Old Universe once and for all and everywhere.

Yes, I also got the impression that the migration lead by Korval has finally ended. Which makes the end of Korvals contract fitting if a bit prematurely.

But I don’t think many were aware that up till now there was still a bit migration going on. And Korvals contract as captain was to the people on the ship, not the whole migration.

I always wondered what would happen if Korval declared in the Gazette the final end to the migration. Not everyone would be bewildered, at least some Korval alleys and the scouts ought to figure it out. Properly a silly thought. There is no way Korval will release news to the Gazette again.
