Accepting the Lance – Chapter 45

Six of Us
Jenarian Station

In which vin’Athen knows when to fold ’em.

I’m surprised vin’Athen surrendered so quickly after finding out they had Korval’s backing. Objectively, of course, it’s probably the wisest course, but I would expect that employees of the Department are strongly discouraged from surrendering (a) at all and (b) especially to anyone associated with Korval.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the event he mentions that’s already befallen the station. And it’s interesting that he doesn’t go into detail about that event; it has a feeling of “I don’t want to think about it”, though it could just be “I don’t want to talk about it to you“. The vagueness of the wording also leaves open the possibility that, somehow, vin’Athen himself was what happened.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the incidents mentioned back in the prologue, targeting the Department’s Healers and dramliz?

Ah, well, that’s the downside of doing a post a day for a book that’s over 90 chapters long and only came out 50 days ago.

I did not “accept” the surrender. It seemed to me as if it were going to be some kind of ploy to keep their guard down while he expected reinforcements to appear momentarily. Or if not expected, at least—hoped.
