In which Daav grieves.

Daav’s grief is very effectively conveyed in this chapter, to the point where I feel obliged to remain respectfully quiet and not intrude with my chatter.

    Love for one who needs your care may often be sufficient to forestall a choice not to live, and not only in fiction. First Daav’s promise to Er Thom to see him in the morning, and then his promise to his son, that he would live “as long as he may.” These two steps keep him alive during the time he might just as well have chosen otherwise.
