Accepting the Lance – Chapter 36

In which the house is quiet.

A little demonstration of melant’i in Val Con’s conversation with the Healers: the person enquiring after the health of Anthora and Ren Zel is Lord yos’Phelium, their thodelm, but the person who would like to hear from Anthora when she has a moment is Val Con, her brother.

I was chafing on behalf of the Pathfinders by the time we finished this chapter. They cannot feel comfortable nor productive in their current situation. They need an assignment.

I must still need some training in this system of delms. I had been thinking that Lord yos’Phelium was their Delm. But I guess the Healer would have called Val Con “Korval” if it were their Delm who had initiated the inquiry?

Interesting and perhaps premonitory that, while thinking about the department, Val Con recognizes that the DOI has expanded its intentions from himself to Korval entire to the whole of Surebleak, and he hesitated to wonder to what dizzy heights the stakes would rise next—the galaxy? The universe? Also interesting to me is that the authors have acknowledged two different concepts (“galaxy” and “universe”) which they had seemed to trade off arbitrarily in some of the earlier books.

(@Paul: It feels as if your chapter summaries have become shorter and shorter. Could I just mention that I’d love to see enough included to make each chapter more distinctive?)

Funny enough, when I read this chapter I also reflected on the use of “galaxy” instead of “universe” and wondered whether someone drew the authors’ attention to the terminology

I read a fair amount of space opera. It surprises me when authors use the two terms interchangeably, and it happens more often than I’d have thought.

I regret that the chapter summaries are going to continue to be short and of indifferent quality for the rest of the book. The chapters are short, which gives one less to summarize, and there are many of them, which makes it harder to distinguish them — and, to be honest, I didn’t spend as much time crafting them as I might have because I was in a hurry to get on and find out what happened next.

If I have time, I might go over the ones that are still in queue and see if I can improve them, but I can’t promise anything.

Yes, that’s how I understand it.

Except that Lord yos’Phelium is not their thodelm. Anthora is yos’Galan, (and presumably so is Ren Zel) which is a different line with a different thodelm. I think Shan is thodelm of yos’Galan isn’t he?

Val con was presumably addressing the healers as a thodelm of their clan, their thodelm being off planet.
